When I moved to New York City over 8 years ago, I knew I had to learn how to make the most of my small spaces. It may not always be easy to manage fitting everything you need into a small space, but it is doable! You just need the right tools. Here are some of my favorite small apartment must-haves that have helped me make the most of my NYC apartments over the years.
Small Nightstands with Outlets
This set of nightstands is the perfect size for a small NYC apartment. With two fabric drawers and a shelf, it can also fit all of your essentials. The best part is, it has traditional outlets and USB slots built right into the top. No more digging around to plug in your phone charger!
Foldable WFH Desk
As someone who primarily works from home in a tiny 1-bedroom apartment, have a desk that works for me is a must. This one is perfect because it is not only just big enough for my laptop, keyboard, and lamp, but it can also fold up and out of the way when needed. This is great for clearing space if I’m ever hosting guests!
Nespresso Vertuo Pop+
Okay, hear me out! If you love making espresso and full sized coffees, but don’t have room for 2 separate machines, a Nespresso is definitely for you. It saves space by working as a 2-in-1 coffee and espresso maker. I used to be a Keurig girl, but have loved the versatility offered by my Nespresso this past year.
Extra Folding Chairs
If you have a small space but also love having guests over, keeping flexible extra seating options on hand is essential. They may not be the most glamorous thing, but they are something I am definitely always glad I have when the time comes.
Extendable Dining Table
You’ve probably guessed by now that flexible furniture is the name of the game. Many New York City apartments do not have space for a dining table on a day-to-day basis. That’s what makes collapsable dining tables like this one a perfect option so you can still have a romantic dinner or dinner party when you want to!
Kitchen Storage/Coffee Bar Shelving
Another thing that New York City apartments are notorious for lacking is kitchen counter space. Mine certainly does not have enough room for all my small appliances! I made this shelving unit into the perfect coffee bar and storage shelf. My Nespresso lives on top, my favorite mugs hang from the hooks, and the shelves store coffee pods, tea bags, and other miscellaneous items. I also have the matching mini shelf with wheels, which is the perfect size to be extra storage in our entryway.
Foldable TV Tray
Okay, I have a confession to make! Despite having a modular dining table, my fiance and I eat dinner on this TV tray most nights. We just love watching our favorites shows and movies during dinner and getting cozy on the couch. The great part is, we can also fold it down and out of the way to make room to snuggle with our dog when we are done. I also sometimes work from here during the day if I’m in a sit-on-the-couch and not a sit-at-a-desk mood. It really is the perfect versatile piece.
